I met Dr. Sureya Sayadi a couple of days ago at a restaurant in Fremont. We had quite a heated debate,I disagree with a lot of what she believes in, she did have some valid points though. Here is the video from her website. CNN couldn’t show more than two minutes of it, here you can see the whole 10 minutes.
Video of honor killing of Du’a Khalil in Iraq
Warning: This video contains extremely disturbing images.
If you thought there was a limit to the barbarism man is capable of, think again. A 17 year old Kurdish girl by the name of Du’a is stoned to death for allegedly having an affair with a sunni boy. She is dragged to the middle of a bazaar by her own cousin and then brutally stoned to death while a large crowd of men not only watch but actively participate in the act. It is important to note that despite the chants of Allah-O-Akbar in the movie, this murder has nothing to do with Islam. Also this was not done in the name of Islam. The Yezidi tribe that this poor girl belonged to is held captive by its savage traditions. Yezidis have been persecuted for centuries by many different civilizations. Even after many migrations and forced Islamization by the Ottomans, they have kept their traditions.
What drives an otherwise sane human being to ruthlessly kill another person and that too one of his own family? Is it honor? But what is honor anyway and why is it restored by taking a human life. Generally we like to shrug away such incidents as acts of savagery by the illiterate, the unenlightened among us. Depending on the flavor of stereotyping you subscribe to, you might be inclined to think that this was just another barbaric act by the savage Arabs. Such simple explanations, however, are constantly being challenged in the world we live in. We can’t explain it that easily, there probably isn’t one size that fits all. What drives a student in a prestigious institution such as Virginia Tech to systematically murder so many of his class mates is probably a very different emotion than the one that motivates a suicide bomber in Baghdad to take his life. or is it? Would a terrorist be able to do it if he didn’t have the comfort of a gun or a bomb to shield himself with, if instead all his victims were tied down and he had to stone and maim each one to death. Would he be able to bear the screams of innocent children. The men who participated in stoning this innocent girl or those that slaughtered Daniel Pearl are at some level more savage than the suicide bombers or the carpet bombers. They don’t have to visualize the consequence of their action, they can see it. They have to live it and live with it. And yet they do it.
This should remind us once again how fundamentalist beliefs in any ideology be it religious, tradition, nationalism or caste can drive men to commit unspeakable acts of horror. We witnessed that in Holocaust against the Jews, US plundering in Viet Nam, Pakistanis slaughtering Bengalis, genocide of Muslims in Bosnia and of Tutsis in Rawanda and last but not least the ongoing genocide in Darfur. Actors change yet the plot remains the same.
Is it really ideology though, I am not so sure. Would a suicide bomber still be impelled solely by his beliefs to take so many lives if he was *not* to become a hero in his own community. Is it his way of standing out, if not in life then in death. Is he thus at the core driven by the same emotion that drives a painter to paint a master piece? I don’t think it’s only the seventy virgins, they are the consequence not the cause. At the end of the day, it’s very selfish, very worldly. Religion, God, Tradition, etc. are all slogans, excuses used to pacify one’s own conscience. It’s not even revenge, revenge is futile unless it’s accompanied by glory. “Honor” needs an audience, it’s not won and lost in isolation.

Just a random through:
To me this video epitomizes the way this decade has shaped in my mind. Repression, brutality and conflict has always been around. But I feel this decade has the unfortunate distinction of bringing out the worst that human kind has had to offer in recent history. To compound the pain, natural disasters have had terrible effects all over the world.
I feel as if something deeply profound is happening in human history at this time. The effects might not be felt or known for some time, but when it all ends it will be a significantly changed reality.

Despite your warning, the video made me gasp in horror. But as I pull back I need and try to gain perspective I realize that mob killings have been around for quite a while. Humans have a need to define ourselves and in defining our selves, need to draw a line. Our definition comes as much, if not more, from those outside our circle of definition than from those within the circle. And yes, I completely agree with you that fundamentalist of any flavor, are those most likely to commit these barbaric acts.
Literary works citing this kind of barbarism and society definition include:
* The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson http://www.classicshorts.com/stories/lotry.html
* The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scarlet_Letter
Other historical references:
* The Salem Witch Trials http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_salem_witch_trials
* The Inquisitions were none too polite either http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquisition
What I think is really different in these times is the fact that we get amature video tapes posted on the Internet. Imagine the camera person. He held the camera the whole time and likely didn’t participate at all. Yet he was compelled to capture the scene. Was he excited? Was he appauled? What was he thinking when he posted the video? What does he think now that he sees others discussing it?
The world is different.

My heart raced while watching the video. In horror, I felt such disgust and anger as the group of beasts clad in human skin repeatedly kicked and stoned the girl to death. I shiver to think what these people were feeling during her execution. I must say that I have never seen any human being die in front of my eyes and it is not a pleasant feeling. I was repulsed by this action and I prayed for the girl and the suffering she endured and am happy that she longer lived among these people. I have been asking myself this question lately, are human beings born good or evil? I was convinced that we were born good, but now I am not sure…

Thank you Ginger for such an insightful comment. I couldn’t agree with you more.
You asked a really intriguing question. What was going through the guy’s head when he was recording this movie, could he have done anything different, could he all by himself have stopped or at least protested against the act, through his inaction has he become a willing participant? On the other hand, was he thinking that by capturing the crime and then broadcasting it to the world he could do a much bigger service to humanity than he possibly could have done fighting an rampant mob? Or was he doing it for no particular reason and uploaded it just because he had made it?
This calls for a poll, a poll that will reveal more about the person casting the vote than the actual subject of the vote.

[...] manner of execution or the execution itself? I received several responses to the honor killing video that I had posted a few days ago. Everybody who saw that video was disgusted, enraged, extremely disturbed, that’s of course [...]

it makes me feel physically sick to think about what these people think is acceptable in a society. this epidemic of honour killings must be stopped immediately because its unethical and morally wrong. this girl did nothing to get that type of punishment. we studied this issue in my social studies class and the most disturbing thing is that the men gathered around this poor girl and were excited to see her be killed in such a barbaric manner. saying that this video is repulsive doesnt even start to explain the disgust i feel for these people. i dont know whats happening to the world but to me it looks like we are going back into the dark ages because this action is nothing less than medieval torture.

these people are nothing but the eveil in dress of human, I have come a cross people like that, and what you have to do with them is to eliminate them from the face of the earth and send them where they belong and that is rubish bin of the history.
every single person who allow themself to attack that poor girl for whatever reason should be executed life.
That is how strongly I feel about it, and you know what this is the only langusage these people undrestand well, be like themself is being kind to them.

I do not find words to describe what it makes me feel….

i heard about the horrific murder of Du’a Khalil in the newspaper, and when i heard that there was video footage of the murder being posted on the internet, i felt somehow compelled to search for it. Morbid curiosity, i suppose.
Watching the footage opened my eyes to how sick and prolonged this attack was, and to try and accept that this was real footage was a very hard thing to do.
This effort to turn these images into reality made me realise something. Perhaps the twisted animals carrying out the attacks do not see things in reality? Perhaps they have been bent and twisted from the mind downwards, and that justified reality inherited from the earth has all but left them?
With this in mind, they have no place on earth and so they should all individually be locked in solitary confinement until they die. (please note- opinion based, an important point often overlooked)

These deranged villagers are liberated with sadistic pleasure as they torture their prey. A society that makes children objects of sacrific is incapable of love, and undeserving of freedom.

Women must unite and become warriors, this sickness must end.
September 26, 2007 at 3:14 am
lets think of other perspective, what if those killed her so mercilessly are killed back the same manner? your answer would reflect the human instinct and might give some understanding of human emotions. Moreover generalizations of your reaction to my question would also show deep inside we are evil or good.
personally i would feel satisfied if i hear the news about those involved in this merciless act were treated the same.
Answering the question would also highlight our impressions of bigger problems of problems like revenge killing (suicide bombing), and so called terrorism around the globe. I firmly believe that human instincts and behavior vary at extremes on the scale of evil and good. So generalizing religion, practices and tradition would be another mistake we would make while making an opinion about un-civilized act. For true this barbaric act has nothing to do with any of the great world faiths (islam, christianism or judaism) so please avoid tagging to these faiths.

I am not going to try to sweeten the pill, these people aree barbaric for the simple reason that stoning is barbaric. What does it matter that a girl decides to date another person from different sect etc.
What I find even more shocking is that some of these people are managing to perpetuate these horrific crimes in the West and weak willed politicians are slow to legislate against it.
There is no perspective that I can think of that will justify such callousness. I suspect most of these men are motivated by sexual angst towards women.
November 20, 2007 at 2:31 pm
These are simply ANIMALS!
Primitive stupid ignorant brutal jerks. This is not religion, not culture, not even tradition. Nothing just a big piece of shit…
This video should go around the world!!!
November 21, 2007 at 5:55 am
This is not even a lump of shit. But after seeing this video are we doing anything or are we making ppl unite among themselves to fight against such a crime?Genearlly after seeing this we shrug away such barbaric incidents and shed off our responsibilities.Inspite of this we have to face this challenge which is very well present in our system. In nutshell we have to stand aagainst such ppl who are doing it for the sake of their so called HONOR…
November 21, 2007 at 8:38 am
Why does everyone keep calling this an honour killing? What honour is there in being a part of a mob that kills a defenceless person. I felt ashamed to be human and had to stop watching half way through when I questioned whether I was as bad as the guys recording this on their mobile phones rather than walking away or God forbid doing something to help this poor defenceless girl – that would have taken honour and courage.
November 21, 2007 at 12:06 pm
I couldn’t watch this video even halfway…cuz i nearly vomited…sometimes i wonder does this barbaric culture still happens in this 21st century…or are we living in dark ages??? The only way we can stop this is to wipe this low form humans of the face of the earth!
They should not be called humans and have absolutely no idea how moral standards are supposed to be…
But most of all, I feel very sorry for the women in this region who have to endure the oppression in which they have to live! My heart goes out to them and I hope one day they will be able to live a free and happy life!

i think this arab civilisation and their culture of ‘honour killing’ is ridiculous and bullshit. i dont know where do these arab tribe put their brain. they are thinking using their ass. to me, they are just insecure of their own women getting laid with another tribes man. fucking degenerate motherfuckers. accept the fact that human are free to choose and even in in Islam, the maxim says ‘No Force in Islam’. these motherfuckers do not understand their own religion and now when the West are oppressing them using this stupidity as a tool, why are we blaming them?after all, it is your fucking (arab Muslims) weakness that cause u all this trouble in your own land when the West trying to colonise you all. all this must stop. read some books and understand the true moral value Islam preach. Arab man is so fucking stupid, childish, paranoid and inferior because they hate it when they see their women with another man from different race or religion. i think that originate from the jealousy when they prohibit their wife to show their face to the public. come on mann, its just a face. its not like the public will go climax and ejaculate if they saw your wife’s face. im talking on the context of small scale. in the bigger scale, they feel insecure that their women goes with another man from another race or religion. this is bullshit man..wake up u arab fools. think how to save your own land rather than be so naive!!

I am an arab who lives in Israel, it’s not like this here, I’ve seen people dying honestly, that’s not new here, but this footage shocked me, I feel sorry for the girl, for her parents and family.
And I still don’t get it, why would anybody do that for the honor?! honor of the family is measured by the number of educated members in it, by it’s money, by it’s goodness and respect.
for god’s sake, i know that if you are going to be executed for any reason, you choose the way you wanna die, not be stoned naked in front of everyone.
it’s really important to know, Im sure these people in the footage are muslims, but htis has nothing to do with religion, religion says exactly the oppossite.
in short these people are discusting, I feel totally embarrassed as an arab after I saw this video shot…
you just wanna cry but ur too shocked and confused, this is undescribable.

It is really shocking that not one or two but the whole community is same. All kurdish bastards are worst than dogs.Iam also a muslim girl but i never heard of the term HONOUR KILLING,The term itself is so disgusting.I think all middle east tribal bastards especially kurdish bastards irrespective of religion practice this henious crime bcoz their law itself supports it.
I dont hav words to describe these bastards. How cum not even single bastard felt mercy on this child. My blood boils to take revenge on them.

This is absolutely horrifying & excrutiatingly painful. This is absolutely barbaric. This poor girl was someone’s daughter. I cannot begin to imagine how her Mother must have felt. I deeply deeply regret having watched this footage. I really wish I hadn’t. It is despicable. How could they treat her so bad. I had to throw up after I watched this and haven’t been able to sleep since. I am a Muslim woman and a mother and I am thoroughly ashamed of calling myself a Muslim. Then again, they say that Yezidis are not Muslims, but they are as it is these people from the Yezidi trible that slaughtered the Prophet’s (S.A.W.) grandson. They are absolute MONSTERS and may they burn in hell.
Islam & Qur’an does not teach this. This is absolutely gut-wrenching. What must have the poor girl been feeling?? – I had to do a silent prayer for this poor soul. May Allah burn these people who killed her mercilessly in HELL. I HATE THEM. May Allah Grant Dua a place in Heaven where she can rest in Peace. Amen

omg dis is disgusting .. my stomace turned when i watched it.. i feel soo sick.. killing is not allowed in islam watever the reason and some muslims should understand that.. only allah can punish are sins not humans!! i hope these men rot in hell for what they did!! this is just giving islam a bad name!!
